Just a few comments:
you need to distinguish between server side and client side languages/platform. The most common are:
HTML/JS+Php
HTML/JS+Java
Java on both client and server
Flash + media server

The best is Flash+media server since one server can hold hundreds/thousands of users online at the same time and you also get audio+video chat.

I think next is HTML/JS + a Java server.

HTML/JS + Php will create a decent load on the server since it works by pooling the db.

Java+Java is the worst solution since very few people have Java on client.

We have used ParaChat for years now and it has grown as our website has. We have had no issues with it's reliability. However we used digichat for a few months and found it VERY unstable after about 400 concurrent users. My vote? ParaChat. I heard they are working on a ParaChat iPhone App. I can't wait to see it.

Thank you for writing this interesting comparison. I own a Digichat site myself but I'm looking for an affordable Digichat hosting solution, which poses a problem..

This is a useful article, thank you. One thing that you could have touched on a little more was how many concurrent users each script can handle and how much the hosted solutions cost per user per month. Other than leaving out some of the financial issues related to the chat hosting, this is a nice in depth article. Thank you!
