The most common are: HTML/JS+Php HTML/JS+Java Java on both client and server Flash + media server The best is Flash+media server since one server can hold hundreds/thousands of users online at the same time and you also get audio+video chat. Java+Java is the worst solution since very few people have Java on client. Just a few comments:

We have had no issues with it's reliability. However we used digichat for a few months and found it VERY unstable after about 400 concurrent users. My vote? ParaChat.
